Hoi Li’s Import Alert: How the New NRS Duty Affects Your China Orders
If you're part of the "Import Hustle," you already know that China is the source of everything from your iPhone 15 to the Solar Panels on your roof. But as of January 2026, the NRS (Nigeria Revenue Service) has introduced a new digital duty assessment system.
No more guessing at the port. The goal is 100% transparency. But transparency often comes with a bill. Here is how to navigate the new rates.
1. Electronics: The 15% Standard
For items like phones and power banks, the standard duty is now localized at 15%. However, if you are importing for resale, you must also account for the 7.5% VAT at the point of entry. Use our Real-Time Price Tracker to see if the "landed cost" still beats the Computer Village price or the latest Arbitrage Rates.
2. Solar & Renewables: The 0% Flex
Under the "Green Energy Initiative," solar panels and hybrid inverters remain at 0% Import Duty. This is a massive win! If your clearing agent is telling you otherwise, show them the Section 12-B exemption of the 2026 Reform Act. This is the best time to scale your solar business.
3. The 'Landed Cost' Formula
The NRS now uses a "Verified Exchange Rate" for duty calculations, updated weekly. To get your real cost, use this street math: (invoice Price + Freight + Insurance) x Exchange Rate + Duty + VAT. If your "Hustle Margin" is under 20%, you might be better off buying from local wholesalers like Alaba International.
Hoi Li's Import Hack:
Always document your Freight costs separately. The NRS assesses duty on the "CIF" (Cost, Insurance, Freight) value. Having a clean invoice saves you from "Over-Assessment" penalties. Stay sharp, in-law!
