Currency Exchange & Risk
Understanding Currency Risk
Currency risk (also called exchange rate risk) is the potential for your investment returns to be affected by changes in the exchange rate between your home currency and Nigerian Naira (NGN).
When you invest in Dangote Refinery from outside Nigeria, you must convert your home currency (USD, ZAR, KES, or GHS) into NGN to buy shares. If the Naira weakens against your currency during your investment period, the value of your Nigerian assets decreases when converted back to your home currency—even if the stock price itself went up.
Example: If you invest $100,000 when NGN/USD is 1700, you get ₦170,000,000 in shares. If the rate moves to 1800 when you sell, your ₦170M is now worth only $94,444—a 5.6% currency loss, regardless of stock performance.
3 Currency Scenarios
Favorable Scenario
Naira strengthens against your home currency
Unfavorable Scenario
Naira weakens against your home currency
Neutral Scenario
Exchange rate remains stable
Currency Risk Mitigation
Gradual Conversion (Dollar-Cost Averaging)
Instead of converting all funds at once, spread your investment over 3-6 months. This averages out currency fluctuations and reduces timing risk.
Example: Invest $25k/month over 4 months instead of $100k at once.
Natural Hedging (Dividend Reinvestment)
Reinvest NGN dividends back into more shares instead of converting to your home currency. This keeps your investment in Naira and compounds returns.
Benefit: Avoids conversion fees and currency losses on dividends.
Long-Term Hold (Reduce Short-Term Volatility)
Currency movements tend to be cyclical. Holding for 3-5+ years smooths out short-term rate swings.
Historical data: NGN/USD has fluctuated ±10-15% annually but stabilized over 5-year periods.
Professional Hedging (Advanced)
Use currency forward contracts or options to lock in today's exchange rate for a future date. Requires working with specialized forex brokers.
Note: Adds complexity and cost. Best for large investments ($500k+).
