Paying Rent? How to use your Landlord's receipt to pay less tax

Published on January 15, 2026

The 2026 Tax Reform removed the old "Consolidated Relief Allowance" (CRA) but replaced it with some very "targeted" hits that actually favor tenants.

What is the Rent Relief Hack?

You can now claim 20% relief on your annual rent as a deduction from your taxable income, up to a maximum of ₦500,000. This is a "hack" that 99% of employees don't know about yet.

How do I claim it?

You need your Landlord's receipt. When filing your returns or updating your records with your HR/Employer, you present your rent payment proof to reduce the amount of your salary that is actually "taxable."

Is it for everyone?

As long as you are a resident in Nigeria and paying rent, the NRS allows this deduction. It’s the government’s way of acknowledging that housing costs are high! Don't leave this money on the table.
